Jonathan Smith
Partner
Head of Family Law Department

Jonathan came to Moseleys as a trainee in 1977, and he was admitted as a solicitor in 1979. He developed his skills as an advocate in the local Magistrates Courts, where he practised both criminal law and family law. He has also developed an expertise in employment law.

Now he specialises in all varieties of family law including children's issues, financial issues, contested and uncontested divorce, and care issues. Society is ever changing, especially in respect of human relationships. Modern law has to deal with pre-nuptial agreements and separation agreements, and the difficult issue of the division of jointly owned or jointly used property between unmarried couples. Jonathan's experience enables him to advise on all of these issues.

Jonathan is a member of the Solicitors Family Law Association, which advocates a conciliatory approach to family law, and Jonathan exercises his professional skills by his professional ethic which is that the more you agree then the less you pay the lawyers.

Jonathan advises both employers and employees on all respects of employment law, including terms and conditions of employment, compromise agreements dismissal procedures, redundancy and all varieties of applications to the Employment Tribunal, in which he has had experience as an advocate.

Jonathan's work in the Magistrates Court gave him an interest in Licensing Law and he is the firm's expert on this subject. He appears in Tamworth Magistrates Court frequently to apply for liquor licences for premises in the area and he has a good working knowledge of the Licensing Act 2003 and the ramifications of it.

Marriage, and the contract between employees and employers are the most complicated relationships into which we enter and when they are in jeopardy the same skills are needed to help resolve disagreements. Jonathan has developed those skills over 25 years of practice.
