'Maintenance' is the usual term for the financial support often called 'spousal maintenance' or 'alimony'. It is a payment from the income resources of one of you to the other. Such payments might continue as between yourself and your spouse after your separation and after a divorce as well. Each party to a marriage has a legal obligation to maintain the other, and in the absence of an agreement concerning the amount of spousal maintenance that might be paid, a Court can fix it. In legal jargon 'maintenance' is referred to as 'periodical payments'. The Courts have significant powers to enforce orders for the payment of maintenance. |
